In Charlottesville, Virginia, nestled behind rows of bars and the dirty, industrial back sides of restaurants near the University of Virginia, there lies a slab of asphalt called The Corner Parking Lot. In 2010, after whittling over 140 hours of footage into 71 minutes, director Meghan Eckman released a film about it.
At first, The Parking Lot Movie may sound like an incredibly boring documentary, but after the first five minutes, it is clear you're in for something more than a set of mismatched college guys taking money from car-clad customers.
The Corner Parking Lot: An "Autonomous" Space
The Corner Parking Lot has been owned and operated by Chris Farina since 1986. Over the years, he has employed and befriended over 100 "fractured poets;" the artists, philosophers, musicians, and students that sit for hours in a humbly ramshackled booth at the exit of the lot. With so much time to solitarily contemplate the existential questions and themes that the Parking Lot can bring to light, the overly educated attendants have a lot more than parking fees on their minds.
