Cox, who turns 69 in May, announced last September that 2010 would be his last season -- ending a tenure that spanned four seasons from 1978-81 and resumed in 1990 after stints as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays (1982-85) and general manager of the Braves (1986-90).

Filling his shoes will be difficult at best: Cox and Hall of Famer Joe McCarthy are the only managers whose teams won 100 games in six different seasons. In addition, the Cox-led Braves won 14 consecutive division titles, a record for any pro sports, from 1991-2005.

Widely regarded as a players' manager, Cox commands respect with a gentle-but-firm approach. He only asks his players to show up on time and play hard. He refuses to criticize any of them publicly, although his private tongue-lashings are legendary. He's also a world-champion umpire baiter; Cox has been ejected from games more often than any pilot in baseball history.
